Unleaded or Super Unleaded?

Post by YamCam62 »

Hi,

I was told Super Unleaded is far better than Unleaded petrol for your engine but I would like to hear other opinions?
Would it be better to run Super Unleaded in my 2000 YP250 or would Unleaded do the same job?
PS: Thinking more of reliability rather than economy .

cheers, Rob

Love the Zappa quote. Here in the Colonies I use 87 octane unleaded in my Burger, which is regular rather than super. It's what the service manual recommends. You never need to use better than 91.

The manual says "Regular Unleaded Gasoline" so don't use Super.

@ mightbesane, octane rating units are different in the US.

That's why I mentioned that I'm a Colonial. ;-)

It's very doubtful that running it on what the handbook recommends will make it go bang or even be less reliable - one assumes that the bike's set up at the factory to run on Regular Unleaded.

More than that - I guess that today's engine management system will be fully aware of your petrol and manage everything to suit, so I'd guess they'd be no advantage.

just try a tank of super and see if you like it..... i notice a bit of extra torque and defo more responsive on the throttle... but its a lot more expensive.....

fill your tank when its half full of normal unleaded,  with super...then next fill go back to normal... mix it up a bit...wont hurt the engine..

The engines knock sensor will detect what fuel you have and adjust itself accordingly. You only need Super in vehicles designed for it, in modern engines designed for normal unleaded its money for nothing using Super. Works well in old carb models though.

I put it in the car once, and the acceleration was far better.
However, because of this, I ramped it and it destroyed the fuel economy.
Didn't bother again after that....
