Isle of Man TT May/June 2012

The lad and me did our very first Isle of Man TT trip this year.

Despite a naturally cold (wel colder than SE England) and damp climate the place is now one of my all time favourites.

The relaxed attitude the Manx people generally have is quite infectious.

We spectated from Hillbery, Creg Ny Baa, Union Mills, Bray Hill and Cronk Ny Mona. Hillberry was probably the best, separated from bikes doing 170 mph by a 2 foot dry stone wall and another 2 feet of mesh fence on top!

On non race days we rode out to Castletown, Port Erin, Port St Mary, Laxey, Peel and Ramsey. As well as the racing and practice we ogled the race bikes in the paddock (totally free un hindered access) and saw the Purple Helmets at Onchan stadium.

Hi Ged,
Despite the weather it looks as though you and the lad had a great time and as usual, some good pictures. I have a question for you and that is did your tent fit in the top box? It looks a good size and now that the wife has started to come out again on the scooter / bike I may invest in a larger tent with 'standing' room.

That's what I thought - lad's turning into dad!!

Great piccys as always, and I agree with what you say about the people's attitude, Ged, very laid back. We went there quite a while ago after a bit of a stressful time through family problems, and within a couple of days we felt completely relaxed. had a great time. Don't fancy the fuel prices much now though - £150.9 ltr unleaded!

Rog, that's one of life's little conundrums, finding a tent with some height that fits in the top box!!! That one doesn't but then you wouldn't want that one unless you wanted separate bedrooms. Having several tents the ones with a lower height generally have shorter poles that fit in the top box, whereas those with more headroom have longer poles. Pretty impressed with that Coleman though. It saw a hell of a lot of rainfall and high winds and didn't leak at all. A bitch to put down in the rain and wind though!

Then again 3 of us have used the Tesco 2 man cheapo tents at the Bulldog Bash the last few years and none of those have ever leaked either, despite severe weather provocation!

Yeah bummer about the Senior but heyho. Every race was delayed or rescheduled, too. The most important thing to take with you is patience according to regular TT-goers. Yep, that CB500 refuses to die! It went over the mountain quite well, too.

Yep, definitely a case of handing over your wallet at the petrol station and not looking at the bill! On the plus side they don't drain your petrol on the Steam Packet ferry any longer so you can at least arrive with a full tank.
