I have been thinking of fitting a upgraded variator to my yamaha cygnus x. Do they make a improvement over standard ones. Any advice on the best make to buy. Thank you in advance for any help. JOHN

Depends what you mean by "improvement"?

are you looking for top end or take off and acceleration if its just take off /acceleration just try lighter rollers in its low powered scoot doubt you will improve top end

I had a cygnus x, and it's a great little scooter for what it is, but it only makes 10 or 11 hp. I found it was great for around town but when it comes to dual carriage ways you're screwing the arse off it to get 60mph
I hope you can make an improvement on the speed / acceleration though mate.

A after-market variator should give you improved acceleration, especially in mid range. When I had a Malossi variator on the TMax it made it quite a weapon round town! New variators normally allow the engine to rev higher. You shouldn't expect one to do anything for your top speed though.

The problem with it being for a low powered 125 is that any gains from variator fiddling would be minimal.
If you want to see any significant improvement you need more cubes.

You can improve acceleration simply by putting in lighter rollers...Dr Pulley sliders make a massive difference...but nothing beats higher displacement.

You need a 15hp 125. Or pass your test and get something much bigger.

I personally think theres little you can really do to improve it

'Budget' 125 with's less than 12hp will only be capable of 60mph.

More expensive 125 with 12-15hp will do 65/70mph, but at those prices you can
get 180-300cc's for a few hundred £ more which'll have even better acceleration and
top speeds any way.

The older 125 2 strokes are quite quick, but now most are getting on a bit, drink more fuel
than 4 strokes and are fetching quite a bit of money.

Personally i'd accept the 125 can only do what it can do, or get a bigger cc scooter, but even
then you don't need to go really big a 180-300 will be more than adequate. I passed my test and went
from a SYM megalo 125 with 9.5hp to my SYM GTS 250i with 23hp.

Lighter than stock Dr Pulley rollers, since they have become more readily available they have made upgrading to a different variator rather pointless.
