A2 Licence Changes

Post by aaroncroydon »

Hello all,
I've been following maxi-muppets for a little while now, and I always enjoy the differnt forums and views. I currently run a Honda PCX, and I passed my A2 licence in December 2012. My original reason for doing this was so I wouldn't be tempted to change my PCX (for a couple of years) which I've had since new. However, when my new licence came through, an enclosed leaflet stated I could actually ride a scooter upto 25kw/33bhp, whereas I thought I was restricted to 125cc on an A2.

Anywho, the reason for my post, is that DVLA/gov.uk state that following the changes on 19th January 2013, the A2 restriction has now increased to 35kw/45bhp, which goes up to 500cc/700cc territory https://www.gov.uk/driving-licence-categories
I can't find anything definitive as to whether I am still restricted to 25kw for two years (followed by automatic upgrade to any size output) or whether I can ride 35kw.

I would appreciate your thoughts on this one.

I would guess (note the word guess) that legally speaking, if you passed your test under the old regime, you would still be bound by the old rooms. Presumably it says somewhere on your licence that you are restricted to 25kw???

Just checked my licence, and it does indeed state <25KW. I may just stick to my PCX until the restriction is lifted. Thanks for your reply Mr Grumpy, enjoy your weekend.

If you're happy to stay on the PCX for two years then that'd certainly be the most cost effective option. Ordinarily people rush out to "upgrade" to a 33 bhp machine, but if you're not especially fussed then I guess stay with what you have.

Just one question, what scoot would/will you plan to buy when the restriction is lifted?

Rooms? I meant rules!!! I must be losing my mind even more rapidly than I thought. I wish I could blame predictive texting or whatever everyone else blames these days, but I can't!

Being restricted to <25kw, my first choice would've been the MaxSym. Other 400cc scoots are about £1,000 more.

However, I have my eye on the upcoming Peugeot Metropolis http://www.peugeotscooters.co.uk/peugeo ... s-400i-25/ Not pretty to look at, but there's something about it I quite like. I'm not taken with Piaggios.

But will it have the Piaggio master engine in it or an all new Peugeot engine? You'll certainly be noticed on it though!

Under the new rules you no longer get the <25kw restriction for 2 years then free upgrade on a 125. That only applies to the new A2 catagory with the <35kw limit. Anyone passing now on a 125 will be stuck on 125's unless they test again at age 19 or over on either the new A2 or direct access if they are over 24.

Brand new Peugeot's own engine with 35hp and 38NM. They'll be putting it into the Satelis too and dropping the Piaggio Master engine altogether. Still using the Quasar 278cc though. The Sat400 is almost certainly one of the mystery models on the official UK website but no sign of the Sat300 or any Geopolis.

Hope you have deep pockets though. 3X haven't released the price yet but it ain't gonna be a bargain....
