Halfords 170 piece socket set

Post by primalcarl »

I'm looking at the Halfords Professional 170 piece socket set, supposedly half price at £125. Does anyone own one here? It should cover everything needed to work on a Scooter?

Although it's a fairly comprehensive set, do you really need the AF sockets, the torx bits, etc?

The most used items in my toolkit are: 8mm spanner, 8mm sockets, 10mm spanners (a few of them), 10mm sockets (a few of them), 12mm sockets, 12mm spanners, 13mm sockets, 13mm spanners. Special spark plug socket. Torque wrenches. Fine nose pliers, normal pliers.
After those it's the screwdrivers, then the 14mm, 15mm, 17mm, 19mm, 23mm, 24mm, 27mm, 55mm sockets, & the oil filter socket. Then the wire cutters, wire strippers, soldering gun, multimeter etc.
Other tools such as the clutch locking tool & the variator locking tool come out only rarely. Feeler guages, plug gapping tool, brass wire brush etc., also used when needed.

The ratchet spanners from that Halfords set are very nice btw, I use mine a lot, but always use a socket where possible as sockets fit on the torque wrench.

Was mainly asking if quality is good enough for the money. I use Torx on mountain bikes and at work so definitely need them. Always wanted ratchet spanners :)

Halfords professional tools are very good quality and value imo.
They have a lifetime warranty too.
The only thing to do is decide what you really need, for scooters and bicycles you'll probably only ever need metric.

I have this set:

Recommended ;)

Hi, I have found the Halfords tools to be of good quality. If the set you are looking at is 1/2" drive, you may find some of the contents are too bulky for scooter use, and a mix of 3/8 and 1/4 inch would be more practical. I agree that you will probably never need AF sizes, (unless you also own an old Ford Cortina or similar). Whichever set you buy you will still end up buying that "special" tool for a particular task.

Got a set years ago,£99 ok you might never use ever item but at that price it a life time investment,
and believe me you will eventually use most of it.

I've used their smaller metric spanners for years, and they are as good as Snap-on or Facom. (And cheaper).
As a thought, price up the individual items that you think you might need, and see if it comes anywhere near the money for a kit.
If you still get loads more for the same price, buy the kit.
