How many times have you come off your Bike/Scoot?

Post by anonstarter »

I was chatting to a chum today and we got around to how many accidents we've had. 'Accidents' where we've actually come off the bike/scoot and rolled/bounced along the road. In the last 28 years I've had none. I've had many scary moments but never actually come off. (Push bikes (and skateboards  ) however are a different story. I used to have a BMX and after seeing the film "ET" (1982) we tried to recreate the chase. Although I did go flying, ET wasn't there to prevent me landing on my face, breaking a tooth and cracking a rib. Oddly I sustained similar injury's a few years later playing rugby, but that's a different story.)
I'd been classed as 'cautious' when growing up, but the people who called me that were "nutters" in my book!
(You know what they say, if you wanna look thinner - stand next to a fatter person. ;) )
I kid myself that my sense of self preservation is better now than it's ever been. Or are the odds now heavily stacked against me? :?

So, have you been as 'lucky'? Or have you had more than your fair share of 'offs'? :?:

1 on my first bike - twin disks on a damp road at about 20 mph, and locked the front...
1 on my second, bloke changed lanes and side swipped me...
None on my 3rd and none on my 4th so far...
3 on my first scoot - trying to keep a 100cc pug speedfight maxed out on the revs round the IMAX R'bout for a sling shot across Waterloo Bridge, and finding Diesel!... turning the scoot round and the rear spinnin' up on some mud/grime and snapping round - popped me on my arse!... and hitting a pedestrian that ran out from in front of a bus - and stopped!..
None on scoots 2 and 3 - and none on scoot 4 so far...

So 5 in 21 yrs of riding, none in the last 10... 3 on the 55mph 100cc pug speedfight, when i still had my 155+mph Yam 1000cc Exup! :?

First time this year. After riding through the snow the last couple of years I found the only bit of black ice in Surrey coming down a hill (going up was fine but the road was blocked, coming back the other side was a huge mass of black ice).

Was only doing 25-30mph and wearing all the gear so I was fine not even a bruise. The Xevo doesn't look too good any more though but mechanically it's fine which is a suprise as I thought it would be trashed with only the lightest of drops

Twice knocked off by people coming out of junctions and roundabouts.

Once myself, though at 0mph, when I had just started to ride and didn't realise that ice and scoots are a poor combination (no damage to self or scoot)

Don't get me on to the near misses though.....one webpage wouldn't be enough!!

On my SH300, I was knocked off by someone doing a sudden U turn as I was filtering up on the outside - broke the screen and scratched a few panels. Priced it up and the replacement bits came to nearly £500 and the driver coughed up next day to save going through his insurance (if he had any). I only replaced the screen. Shortly after that I foolishly let my students give my scoot a thorough valet and they did a cracking job, including covering my whole tyres with tyre dressing. I didn't notice it, drove out of the workshop, turned right and whoosh - I went straight over! Just ripped my jeans, skinned my knee and elbow and scratched up the other side of the bike. Then, same scoot, I was riding on the inside lane in an out of service bus lane with a queue of traffic to my right and as I passed a 'keep clear' gap where a side street was, a driver coming from the other direction turned right into the gap and hit me in the side. Knocked me right off and I was carted off to hospital with back muscle spasms. His insurance admitted liability and they paid out £4250 and let me keep the bike. Again, all I replaced was the screen. In all, I haven't done bad out of that bike - paid about £3500 for it from new and 'earned' £4750 in damages. Three screens later it's still looking good and going strong.

Had a Burgman exec for nearly 3 years. 2 European trips on it and stayed upright throughout my whole ownership!

My new bike, the FJR, fell over when I was reversing off my drive. Mis-judged the dropped kerb, turned too early and dropped of the edge of the pavement. Once it started to go, I just abandoned ship and luckily was able to jump off before getting trapped underneath. Took me and a neighbour to pick it up. A little bit heavier than the scooter! My fault that time. You win some, you lose some.

Oh yes, I did drop my Pan European, but I wasn't even riding it...took 3 people to pick it up. I also dropped the Atlantic trying to do a U turn on a very steep bit of road - tried to put my foot down, but the ground was too far away. Picking that up on a steep slope was an 'interesting' experience.......

Knocked off by white van man in 2008 when I didn't know what I was doing (MP3 400), bike written off, no injuries. 2010, in Italy: hit some diesel on a wet hillside and came off. Not a scratch on me or the MP3 250. France 2012, trying to ride the TMAX down a muddy track. Ended up on my side, no damage to me or the bike. 2014, practicing for the IAM test doing figure of 8s on my Kwak. Misjudged completely and fell off at ultra low speed. No damage at all (except to my pride).

Hmm where do I start....
Err so many I can't remember full details of them all, but circa 25 including four collisions with cars.
No injuries.
The last one was late 80s-ish on my Z1300 when I misjudged a bend on the Isle of Skye, going far too fast, ran out of road and skidded sideways into a ditch.
After that I swore I would never again ride like a twat.
No offs since.

Only major ones I have were on my B125, in four years it went down 5 times taking me with it. Nexus 500 only one due to diesel in a car park with a couple little ones not causing any real damage to me or the scoot. TMax has only been 1 which was a rear end on a round about.

Past Bikes: Piaggio B125, Gilera Nexus 500, TMax MK3 in White, TMax MK3 in Yellow, TMax MK3 in Yellow, Honda NC750x in Blue...
