V Strom H'guards on a 650 Exec

Post by maccecht »

Anyone fitted a set of V'strom handguards on a 650 Exec. Brother has them on his 400 but that obviously has different mirrors. Got a set from my old FJR1300 so thought they might fit.

I will be very interested in how this works out. The effect on visibility etc. Not to mention if it keeps your hands warmer.

Definitely keep your hands wamer (and dryer!). I'm just working on fitting some cruiser ones from flea-bay to my Grinnall.

Well it is possible but you need to be a little brutal and a little brave. Simple economics for me. I already had a set of Vstrom handguards and Burgervan 650 ones cost £100. V,Strom ones if you buy new are £50.
I had to do a few things to get them to fit and not foul the mirrors when they are in the folded back position. If you don't have electric mirrors they fit straight on and do not obstruct your vision and most certainly do the job of keeping the wind off. I have been wearing my summer gloves all week.
Things I had to do.
Slightly loosened the bango bolts and push the brake lines down. I also took a little bit of the stop off on the rear brake side so the brake line would go down a bit further. The reason for this is you need to tilt the reservoirs back a bit to help the handguards avoid the mirrors when they are folded. When tilted back it would push the brake lines forward and you would not get the handlebar covers back on hence the need to adjust the brake lines. a rough guide is to tilt them back so the reservoir lines up with the line in the switch gear. See photos.
LH handguard needs a bit of drastic alteration by cutting it back and redrilling so it does not hit the windscreen. RH one also need a tweak for the same reason but it only needs the bit where it meets the Bar end by simply sanding a bit out of the guard so it goes further onto the bar end weight. It also needs a chunk taken out to avoid the mirror but this doesn't change its effectiveness in any way.

This clears the mirror by 5mm.
