Burgman 400 transmission oil change

Well this week I’ve finally got around to swapping the old gunk out of the transmission and replaced with some lovely, slippery, shiny 10/40.
What a goddam difference it’s made to the ride.
Just recently it’s been a little “lumpy” on the uptake of power. That’s how I thought “you need to check belt and oil”.
The belt was replaced 5k ago so checked it for condition and tightness etc. All good. However I noticed I’d forgotten to change oil last time around so it’s done nearly two years since last change (about 9k).
Drained and flushed through for good measure. All tightened up and parts replaced. Out on the road for test. What a difference. Smooth, subtle ride. Next time I won’t leave it so long.
Also removed K&N air filter for good clean/service. Needed it too, it was filthy. Now can’t wait for a good spin out when the sun shines.......

how dare you care for that scooter.

you are ok and within spec. you are to replace the FGOil every 7500mi/12000km

dont forget other things. brake oil (very easy), coolant (summer is coming-takes some time to do the job-see mcbergsmas video), & possibly a gas filter mod.

for the front, you work on 1 caliper at a time.
yes and dont forget the blinker fluid while youre there





for the rear caliper, you will need a helping hand unless you have those hand pumps and front you can do by yourself. clear tubing over the bleed nipple and a 8mm wrench. some rags to cover the resorvoir and a container to hold the fluid. DOT 4 on burgman.

Stibbs, I think there is a technician lurking in you! Well done, and yes, it can make a hell of a difference just doing stuff like that. The Burgmans, as you are becoming aware are pretty easy to work on. I loved mine. Only had it for 5 years though. Kinda wished I had kept it to run alongside my GTS Vespa, but at the time it wasn't convenient to do that.

Rocketman, I'm having trouble getting 'Blinker fluid'. In fact, I always have this trouble! Can you recommend where I can get it? Or is it ok to use 'Electric Light Fluid' instead? I understand this is more plentiful.

blinker fluid is low in supply around the world since covid. hahaha

I’ve done the blinker oil. They work very smoothly now. Whilst on it I checked the depth of the seat vinyl, needed to be topped up by 1/1.00000mm. Easy job using the new vinyl depth gauge and adjusting hook.

You know, I was just adjusting the under head exhaust wheels on the Vespa and I was wondering about the vinyl seat thickness and how to check that too. Thanks for posting on how to do that. I'll get started straight away!
