Non charging Burgman

Post by knight2 »

Went for a short trip to the local hospital and back yesterday put it on the drive to open side gates and garage tried to start it to put it in the garage and it wouldn't start, it churned a couple of times then just made a few nioses and the dashboard flashing. This morning I put a jump starter pack on it and it started straight away, I assumed the battery was knackered and took it to the bike shop to be tested they said it just wanted charging, which was odd as on thursday I had taken it for a longish run of about 220miles. It was the original battery on a 12 plate so I bought a new one took it home fiited it took the bike back to the shop to test it and it was not charging at all. It does have a occasional reluctance to start first time. It's booked it to the bike shop on the 23rd but if any body has any suggestions I'd be pleased to hear them.
It's an AN650 12 plate burgman by the way.

Having had a look around the internet, my money is on the rectfier/regulator.

Can you get at the battery, while the bike is running to see if a voltmeter shows any difference in voltage for engine stopped vs running?

The Old Boys Reg/Rec failed on his.

It's a generic item. Location would be my guess as to why they fail. Enclosed enough to make access a pig, exposed enough to get crud from the front wheel in there.

As John says, 23.5V engine off, 28V engine running, anything else and it's time to go parts shopping. They can fail to hi, putting out 40V will cook the battery but usually just stop charging.

Sounds like there is some confusion arising between the AC voltage expected from the alternator and the DC voltage output by the rectifier/regulator. The final output measured at the battery should be around 14.5 volts DC at a fast idle speed and never more than 15 volts. Lack of charge is more likely to be due to rectifier failure and the alternator output should be checked by reading the AC voltage where it feeds in to the rectifier which could indeed be as high as 28 volts AC and should not be less than around 18 volts AC. Most dealer workshops would probably substitute a new regulator and test at the battery before going any further with more complicated and time consuming checks.

Worth slapping a bit of heat sink compound on the back of the reg/rect when fitting.

I admit to being a bit of a numpty when it comes to bike electrics, but I don't like being beaten. So this mornng I bought a multi meter and spent the afternoon stripping the tuppeware off and disconnecting the reg/rec and spraying the bolts with WD40. Tomorrow or thursday I shall try and do a dynamic stator test, though on the video I watched the cables coming out of the generator are numbered mine aren't that I can see, I doubt it makes a difference but I don't know for sure yet.
Having got this far I did wonder if it wold be worth replacing the reg/rec any way? the bikes a 12 plate so it's 13 years old.

It is now sorted and charging again. the tupperware would have gone back on a lot easier if I had paid just a bit more attention to how it came off but it wasn't too bad. A big thanks to Manhatton Motorbikes for getting me a reg/rec at a good price. :D
